Home Recording Studio help?
I'm a 14 year old that really enjoys recording my own music.
Check out my site: http://www.blastmymusic.com/electrictone
I really want to set up a basic yet decent Home Recording studio that will produce some good High Quality recordings.
I may be forming a band soon with vocals, 2 guitars, 1 bass, 1 drummer
Here's my idea for my setup:
-A Phonic Helix 18Channel Mixer
--includes Cubase LE
-Shure SM57 (for amps)
Does anybody have more experience in the home recording works to help me find a better and possibly cheaper setup?
I've asked this question b4 and I got two totally separate answers.
Answer 1: Get a mixer and software
Answer 2: Don't get a mixer; only get an Audio Interface and software
I really don't wan to have to buy seperate Mic Preamps if i go mixerless.. but the mixer is expensive...
also, even tho a mixer has 18 channels, you can't record 18 things at a time, correct?
Please let me know the best option I have, and thanks very much!
Unless you have a Digital Interface for your computer, you can only record two channels at a time (Left and Right).
So you could record 18 things at once, but this isn't really the best way to go. Recording multiple instruments = mic bleed, especially with drums. Speaking from experience, when you close mic everything then record a band playing loudly, it's almost impossible to make everything sound good, since there's bleed and phase cancellation everywhere.
My solution:
I have a cheapy 4 track running into a good soundcard. I record one instrument at a time, with two microphones, one for each channel. Each member in turn plays to a scratch track. I mix with all of them, so I can blend different microphones to get more satisfactory results.... without having to do as much EQ and compression, etc.
The results are excellent.
Reaper is a Very Good quality mixing/recording program. Link below.
If you want to record more than two things at a time and put them onto separate tracks in the computer, you'll need a digital interface... Tascam makes one for about 400$ i think...
