Pallet Racking - The Options

So you've bought your new warehouse. It's newly built, large and spacious, and will provide you with all the space you are likely to need over the next five years - well, that's the theory, anyway.

In reality, it is very likely that, without adequate planning, things will not work out the way you think, and within a couple of years you will be struggling to fit in all the goods or materials you need to accommodate, so it's worth spending a bit of time at this stage to consider your storage options.

The most important thing about operating a warehouse storage facility is to make sure you utilise the available space with maximum possible efficiency. I know, that sounds obvious, but you would be surprised to learn how many people have not absorbed this simple dictum, and incorporated it into their day to day activities. The obvious is not always so obvious!

You need to consider not only the need to store all those goods, but also how to do that in the most efficient way, bearing in mind issues

such as your budget, the physical layout of your warehouse, andthe relevant Health & Safety issues. There are many different warehouse storage products available to make your task achievable, and hopefully the following information about some of the types of that are available to you will help you in planning your strategy.

Static pallet racking comes in various forms.

Wide aisle pallet racking is very useful in situations where the user is operating fork trucks. With this system you can operate either single or double sided pallets, and the wide aisles facilitate easy manouvreability with maximum safety when loading or unloading.

If space is at more of a premium you may want to consider using a narrow aisles pallet racking system. This type of pallet racking facilitates more efficient use of the available space, partly because more of the floor space is taken up by pallet racking, but also because it allows the option of higher racking. The specialist fork trucks that are needed to work with this type of pallet racking navigate around the aisles by means of guide rails.

Dynamic pallet racking can be a real boon in improving warehouse efficiency. Using this system all available shelf capacity can be used, as goods are loaded onto moving bearers which travel across the racks. When goods are removed from the rack, the positions of the adjacent items are automatically adjusted to effect the most efficient storage possible.

Another option that offers high efficiency warehouse storage is drive in or drive through pallet racking. This is at its best when you are dealing with a small number of products that are being stored in high volume, and does not entail the use of specialist equipment. The goods are stored on pallets that are seated on rails that are attached to the pallet racking, and vehicles drive up to the racking to load or off-load.

This has been the briefest outline of some of the pallet racking storage options that are available to you in planning your warehouse storage.

If you want to take your interest further the next step is probably to look for a pallet racking stockist. Don't be too frightened by the possible costs involved in investing in a storage system. The cost of getting it wrong can be far greater than the cost of getting it right, and there are suppliers around who offer second hand pallet racking systems, to ease the financial burden.
